Understanding the Root Causes of Back Pain
The first step to saying goodbye to back pain is understanding what causes it. It might be due to a sedentary lifestyle, an old injury, or even just daily wear and tear. No matter the reason, understanding the root causes is your key to finding the solution.
The most common causes of back pain that our physical therapists frequently treat include the following:
- Muscle Strain or Ligament Sprain: Repeated heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements can strain the muscles and spinal ligaments. If you’re in poor physical condition, constant strain on your back can cause painful muscle spasms.
- Bulging or Ruptured Discs: Discs, the cushioning between your bones, can bulge or herniate and press on a nerve.
- Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, the discs between the vertebrae deteriorate, which can cause pain, especially if one disc is worn down significantly.
- Spinal Stenosis: This condition results from the narrowing of the spinal canal, putting pressure on the nerves and causing back pain.
- Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome that causes muscle stiffness and fatigue, including back pain.
Remember, it is always advised to consult with our physical therapist for personalized advice. We’ll work with you to identify the exact cause of your back pain and suggest appropriate treatments to ensure you get the results you deserve!

Tips and Exercises for a Healthy Spine at Work
Preventing back injuries is crucial for maintaining a healthy and productive work life. Whether you work a physically active job on a construction site or sit at a desk, your back is under constant strain. However, a few simple changes can significantly protect your spine and avoid painful injuries.
Five Simple Strategies for Preventing Back Injuries on the Job
1. Take Regular Breaks
Sitting or standing in one position for too long can strain the muscles around your spine.
If you work in an office, set a timer to remind yourself every 30-45 minutes to stand up and move around. If you work in retail, on an assembly line, or in similar jobs, find ways to incorporate movement whenever possible. Try stretching during a slow period or taking a quick walk around the floor.
2. Maintain Good Posture
Good posture is also a key factor in preventing back injuries. Whether you’re sitting, standing, or moving around, try to maintain postural awareness and keep your spine aligned with your chest lifted.
Keeping your workstation set up according to ergonomic principles can also help you maintain good posture. If you sit at a desk, make sure your chair supports your lower back. If you work on a computer, make sure the monitor is set at eye level.
3. Invest in Back-Friendly Office Furniture
An adjustable standing desk is one piece of furniture we always recommend to our patients, as it allows you to easily switch between standing and sitting throughout the day, helping to relieve pressure on the spine.
Other possible tools include adjustable chairs (to ensure they’re the correct height), ergonomically designed power tools, and lifting aids.
4. Strengthen Your Core
Your core consists of several muscles that wrap and support your spine, including your back, diaphragm, and deep abdominal muscles. When these muscles are strong, they help stabilize the spine and reduce your risk of suffering a back injury.
5. Practice Proper Lifting Techniques
Many people find themselves needing to lift heavy objects at work–and not just construction or factory workers, either. Whether it’s a big box of 30-year-old files or a new shipment of product to go out on the floor, it’s not uncommon for people to find themselves needing to lift something heavy.
However, proper lifting techniques are essential when lifting these heavy objects. Always bend at your knees, not your waist, and use your leg muscles rather than your back muscles to lift. Keep the object close to your body and avoid twisting your torso while lifting, which can cause injury.
We’re here to help
No matter what you do for a living, our team can help you avoid a painful back injury! We’ll perform a comprehensive assessment, learn more about your work, and then provide personalized strategies to help you build and maintain a healthy spine.

6 Dad Facts for Father’s Day
Gather ’round the grill and toast Dad for Father’s Day—the national holiday so awesome that Americans have celebrated it for more than a century. Here are 6 Dad facts you can wow him with today.
1. Halsey Taylor invented the drinking fountain in 1912 as a tribute to his father, who succumbed to typhoid fever after drinking from a contaminated public water supply in 1896.
2. George Washington, the celebrated father of our country, had no children of his own. A 2004 study suggested that a type of tuberculosis that Washington contracted in childhood may have rendered him sterile. He did adopt the two children from Martha Custis’s first marriage.
3. In Thailand, the king’s birthday also serves as National Father’s Day. The celebration includes fireworks, speeches, and acts of charity and honor—the most distinct being the donation of blood and the liberation of captive animals.
4. In 1950, after a Washington Post music critic gave Harry Truman’s daughter Margaret’s concert a negative review, the president came out swinging: “Some day I hope to meet you,” he wrote. “When that happens you’ll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!”
5. A.A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on Robin’s teddy bear, Edward, a gift Christopher had received for his first birthday, and on their father/son visits to the London Zoo, where the bear named Winnie was Christopher’s favorite. Pooh comes from the name of Christopher’s pet swan.
6. Kurt Vonnegut was (for a short time) Geraldo Rivera’s father-in-law. Rivera’s marriage to Edith Vonnegut ended in 1974 because of his womanizing. Her ever-protective father was quoted as saying, “If I see Gerry again, I’ll spit in his face.” He also included an unflattering character named Jerry Rivers (a chauffeur) in a few of his books.

Crab Cakes ala Plancha
My in-laws introduced me to blue crab when my wife and I visited them in Florida years ago. They catch blue crabs right off the back of their house in the traps tied to their boat dock. We pull the crabs out of the traps, and they go directly into a pot on the grill’s side burner to steam. The crab steams in beer seasoned with Old Bay. We set-up newspapers over the table in the lanai and just dump all the steamed crab right on the table. Then it is time to dig in on the crabs for lunch. Surprisingly, sometimes there are leftover crab. My father-in-law and I will pick all the crab meat out of all the shells. So, what do I do with all the leftover crab meat? I make crab cakes. Crab cakes are often deep fried or pan fried to achieve a golden-brown color, but I made mine on the grill.
The first time I saw crab cakes made on the grill I was working on my friend Steven Raichlen’s TV show “Project Fire”. Originally from Baltimore, he knew how to make a crab cake. These were the biggest crab cakes I had ever seen, and they were almost all crab meat. Here is my attempt to replicate his authentic crab cakes.
I combined my leftover crab with Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, one egg yolk, Old Bay seasoning, salt, freshly ground black pepper, and enough crushed crackers to hold the mixture together. No breadcrumbs, not veggies, just crab, seasoning, and binder. The amounts of the other ingredients will vary based on how much crab you have. If you have a pound of crab meat you can combine one egg,
1 tbps of Dijon mustard, 2 tsp of Old Bay, 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, coarse salt (sea or kosher), freshly ground black pepper, and 1/2 cup fine cracker crumbs (preferably made from crushed saltines). I divided the mixture and made four large crab cakes. Next, I placed them in the refrigerator for an hour to help them stick together.
I heated a plancha on my gas grill. A plancha is a common flat-top griddle used in Spanish cooking that combines high-temperature searing with a small amount of smoking. Planchas can be made from cast iron, steel, or metal. If you want to add even more smoky flavor to the crab cakes, place the plancha over a charcoal fire. Once the plancha was hot, I melted some butter and placed the crab cakes directly on the plancha. The crab cakes sizzled right away. The crab cakes cooked for 3-4 minutes and started to brown on the bottom. I flipped the crab cakes with a spatula and cooked for another 3-4 minutes.
The crab cakes were perfectly golden-brown on the outside. The crab meat was tender, sweet, and delicious. There was a subtle smoky aroma from cooking on the grill. The other ingredients complemented the crab instead of competing with it. Feel free to baste the crab cakes with additional butter, or sprinkle on more Old Bay seasoning, or top with hot sauce. I served my crab cakes with cocktail sauce and lemon wedges. Enjoy!
