Conquering Ankle and Foot Injuries with Physical Therapy

Regaining Mobility: Ankle and Foot Injury Recovery and Prevention for All

Injuries to the ankle and foot can strike anyone, regardless of age or activity level. Whether you’re an avid athlete or simply navigating the daily challenges of life, understanding the path to recovery and injury prevention is vital.

Ankle and foot injuries are common, affecting millions of Americans each year. These injuries can result from various causes, including sports activities, accidents, or overuse. Our physical therapists recognize that ankle and foot health are essential for everyone, and we are well-equipped to assist you in your recovery journey.

At Nestor Physical Therapy, our physical therapists specialize in treating ankle and foot issues, offering personalized care for individuals of all backgrounds. Whether you’re a young athlete or an older adult, we are committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcomes!

Unlocking Foot and Ankle Health: Common Injuries and Conditions Treated by Physical Therapists

The foot and ankle are the foundation for our mobility and bear the weight of our daily activities. Unfortunately, they are also susceptible to injuries and painful conditions that can significantly impact our lives. The good news is that our physical therapists are well-equipped to address and treat these issues effectively.

Here are the three most common foot and ankle injuries and painful conditions that physical therapists regularly treat:

Ankle Sprains:

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch or tear due to sudden twisting or rolling of the foot. This leads to pain, swelling, and instability.

Plantar Fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition characterized by degenerative breakdown, and in some cases inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. It causes heel pain, especially in the morning or after prolonged standing.

Achilles Tendinitis:

Achilles tendinitis involves inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can result from overuse, trauma, or improper footwear.

Don’t let foot and ankle pain hinder your mobility and quality of life. Our physical therapists will help you overcome these common conditions and regain comfort and functionality!

Effective Treatments for Foot and Ankle Injuries

At Nestor Physical Therapy, we’ll start with a comprehensive assessment that considers your medical history, including your previous activity level and the specific injury to your ankle or foot. This evaluation forms the basis of your personalized treatment plan.

We recognize that each patient is unique, and we develop personalized treatment plans tailored to your individual needs, including the following:

Manual Therapy and Exercise:

Physical therapists often begin treatment with manual therapy techniques that include joint mobilizations and soft tissue mobilizations. These hands-on methods improve joint mobility, reduce pain, and enhance tissue flexibility. We also use tailored exercises to help restore normal function, strengthen muscles, and improve the range of motion in the foot and ankle.

Balance and Proprioception Training:

Balance and proprioception training are essential for foot and ankle rehabilitation. These exercises target the improvement of proprioceptive awareness and stability, crucial for preventing re-injury. Research indicates that balance training programs effectively reduce the risk of ankle sprains, particularly in athletes and those with a history of previous sprains.

Modalities:

In some cases, our physical therapists may use ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and laser therapy to alleviate pain and accelerate tissue healing. These treatments can be particularly beneficial in the early stages of injury recovery.

Education and Self-Care:

Patient education is a cornerstone of foot and ankle rehabilitation. Physical therapists guide self-care, including home exercises and strategies to prevent further injury. Studies show that patient education significantly improves outcomes and reduces the risk of recurring issues.

Whether recovering from a sprain, managing a chronic condition, or aiming to prevent future problems, our programs offer effective solutions to restore mobility, alleviate pain, and enhance overall foot and ankle health.

Sweet-n-Smoky Ribs

Ribs are classic summer barbeque. Recently a patient asked me how I make ribs and I shared all the diverse ways that I have prepared ribs over the years. I realized it has been a while since ribs have made an appearance in the newsletter, so this month I am sharing a classic rib recipe. This is my go-to method for ribs when I am making ribs for a party at my house. I usually choose St Louis style ribs since they have more meat on the bones, but if you prefer use baby back ribs.

I start by removing the membrane on the bone side of the ribs. This allows the spice rub to penetrate the meat. Next, I apply a light coating of yellow mustard to the ribs as a binder to help the spice rub adhere to the ribs. Then I generously season the ribs with my homemade barbeque rub. Use your favorite store-bought rub, make your own, or simply season the ribs Texas style with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. If you want to make a quick barbeque rub combine ¼ cup of Kosher salt, ¼ paprika, ¼ brown sugar, and two tablespoons of black pepper.

I placed the seasoned ribs in the refrigerator overnight. I suggest letting the ribs sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. I removed the ribs from the refrigerator 45 minutes before putting them in the smoker. Putting large pieces of cold meat in a smoker or grill leads to uneven cooking and the outside of the food from burning before the inside is done cooking.

I use my pellet smoker when cooking ribs for a party because it is close to “set-it and forget-it” cooking. Pellet smokers generate more smoke at lower temperatures, so I start at 225 degrees to maximize the smoke on the ribs. After the ribs smoke for about an hour I raised the temperature to 250 degrees. The ribs will smoke for an additional 45-60 minutes until the ribs start to develop a reddish-brown color. Once I like the color of the ribs, I remove them from the smoker to wrap them in foil. I lay out a long piece of oversized foil or use two overlapping sheets of foil. Before placing the ribs in the foil, I sprinkle in brown sugar and drizzle honey over the brown sugar. I place the ribs meat side down on the brown sugar and honey and then wrap the ribs. Then I returned the ribs to the smoker and increased the temperature to 300 degrees. The brown sugar and honey will melt into the ribs as they continue to cook. The ribs will cook for another 45-60 minutes depending on the thickness of the ribs. I use the bend test to determine if the ribs are done. I lift the ribs from the center of the rack, and the ribs should bend at the ends. Use an oven mitt or a towel to lift the ribs, tongs could tear the foil, and all the juices will leak out. The rack of ribs should feel loose in your hand, if they feel stiff, keep cooking. Once the ribs pass the bend test, I remove them from the smoker and rest for an hour before slicing. I know you will want to eat the ribs directly off the grill, but they will be dry and your cutting board will be juicy if you slice them right away.

These ribs will not fall off the bone. There will be some bite to the ribs, meaning you can take a bite without the ribs falling apart. If you prefer ribs that fall off the bone extend the cooking time. The ribs developed mahogany color due to the spice rub and the wood smoke. The ribs were crusty on the outside and tender on the inside. The ribs had a smoky aroma from the smoking process and sweet finish due to spice rub, brown sugar, and honey. Enjoy!

Are Your Shoes the Cause of Your Foot Pain?

Who doesn’t love a great pair of shoes, especially when they’re the final touch on a knockout outfit? Unfortunately, shoes are more than just a fashion statement–they can also contribute to foot pain.

At Nestor Physical Therapy, we can let you know for certain if your shoes are causing your foot-related woes. In the meantime, here are some simple guidelines to remember the next time you go shoe shopping.

A Physical Therapist’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Shoe

  • Make sure it fits. Cinderella’s stepsisters learned it the hard way: it doesn’t matter what a shoe looks like if it doesn’t fit your foot. If your shoes are too tight or restrictive, your feet will not have full mobility, leading to pain and other discomfort.
  • Pointed toes are out this season. Those fierce pointy-toed shoes might look great, but they squeeze your toes together in a way that can cause problems in your toe joints.
  • So are high heels. A severe high heel looks fabulous (and sounds even better), but it forces your foot into an unnatural shape, leading to significant impacts on the overall health of your feet–not to mention a higher risk of sprained ankles, lower back pain, and balance issues!
  • But comfort and support are in. The best shoes are the ones that feel good while wearing them and after you take them off. In most cases, these shoes provide your foot with the support it needs to work correctly, ensuring the foot is protected and feeling good.

Okay, so our physical therapists may not be your first choice for fashion tips–but we can help you avoid persistent, debilitating foot pain. Schedule an appointment today to learn more about the right shoes for healthy feet!

Foot Pain Prevention Tips for Staying Active This Summer

Summer is a time for outdoor adventures, exercise, and enjoying the warmer weather. However, increased activity can also place extra stress on your feet and increase the risk of discomfort or injury.

With a few proactive strategies, you can keep your feet healthy, reduce your risk of pain, and continue enjoying all that summer has to offer.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Feet

🔥

Warm Up Before Activity

Never underestimate the power of a good warm-up. Before engaging in any physical activity, dedicate a few minutes to proper warm-up exercises that target your feet, ankles, and calves. This will improve blood flow and prepare your muscles and joints for the demands ahead.
👟

Choose Supportive Footwear

Your shoes are your feet’s first line of defense against impact and strain. Invest in supportive, well-fitting footwear that matches your activity and foot type.
🦶

Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to any signs of discomfort or fatigue in your feet. If you experience pain during or after an activity, don’t ignore it. Pushing through pain can exacerbate existing injuries or lead to new ones.
🌿

Modify Your Activities

Don’t be afraid to adjust your activities based on your fitness level and any existing foot conditions. If you’re new to exercise, start slowly and gradually increase your intensity and duration.

Keep Your Feet Healthy All Summer Long

Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to preventing foot pain. Proper preparation, supportive footwear, and smart activity choices can help you stay active and injury-free.

Patient Success Spotlights

“I was experiencing severe sciatica pain that affected my ability to walk, sit, work, and even pursue my passion—dance. After being told at another PT office that physical therapy wouldn’t help, I saw ads for Dr. Nestor and decided to give it a try. Even though the drive was a bit far, it was absolutely worth it.

Week by week, my pain steadily decreased, and I knew I was in the right hands with Dr. Nestor, Alissa, and Dave. From the moment I walked in and was greeted by Laurie to the time I left after each appointment, I always felt I received the best care in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Today, I can sit, stand, walk, lift heavy items at work, and most importantly dance again, all thanks to Nestor PT. I am incredibly grateful for the care and support I received.”

-Bonnie B.

“Over the summer of 2025, I began experiencing pain in my right buttock that radiated down the back of my right leg to my knee. It got to the point where I couldn’t sit or drive for more than 15–25 minutes without having to stop and walk it off. My doctor ordered X-rays, which showed degenerative changes at L5 and arthritis in the area.

I started physical therapy at Nestor in November, and the results have been incredible. I can now sit and drive for over an hour with only very minor discomfort—and the pain no longer radiates down my leg. One of my wife’s and my favorite things to do is take long car rides together, and I’m finally able to enjoy that again.

I plan to continue the exercises on my own, and if I ever need PT again for any reason, I will absolutely return to Nestor. The staff is awesome—always positive, encouraging, and professional.”
