How to Find Relief for Foot Pain With PT This Spring
Have you ever experienced that sharp, stabbing pain in your foot that makes every step feel like a challenge? Or perhaps a dull, persistent ache that just won’t go away? Foot pain is a common complaint that can significantly impact your quality of life by limiting your ability to work, exercise, and even enjoy simple activities like walking or standing. Physical therapy offers effective, non-invasive solutions to alleviate foot pain, improve function, and get you back on your feet this spring.

Common Causes Of Foot Pain
Understanding the root cause of your foot pain is an important part of finding effective treatment. Let’s explore five of the most common foot pain conditions.
Plantar Fasciitis
This condition involves degeneration of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. It often causes heel pain, particularly in the morning or after periods of rest. Risk factors include obesity, high-arched feet, and activities that put excessive stress on the feet.
Metatarsalgia
This refers to pain in the ball of your foot, often caused by overuse, high-impact activities, or wearing ill-fitting shoes. Symptoms may include sharp or burning pain, numbness, or tingling in the toes.
Achilles Tendinitis
This condition involves inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often causes pain and stiffness in the back of the ankle, especially during or after activity.
Foot Sprains
These injuries occur when the ligaments that support your foot joints are stretched or torn, typically due to a sudden twisting or rolling motion. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bruising, and instability.
Arthritis
This degenerative joint disease can affect any joint in your foot, causing pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Risk factors include age, previous injuries, and family history.
Running To Foot Pain Relief
A woman in her 40s came to our clinic complaining of persistent heel pain that had been bothering her for several months. The pain was particularly intense in the morning, making it difficult for her to even get out of bed. After a thorough evaluation, our physical therapist diagnosed her with plantar fasciitis.
Her active lifestyle and love for running had put excessive stress on her feet, leading to plantar fasciitis. The pain had significantly impacted her life, forcing her to give up running and other activities she enjoyed.
We created a treatment plan that included a combination of pain management techniques, strengthening exercises, and a gradual return to activity.
Pain Management
Initially, we focused on reducing her pain and restoring mobility in the foot and calf through manual therapy techniques, proper recovery routines, and mobility exercises.
Strengthening Exercises
As her pain subsided, we introduced exercises to strengthen the muscles in her feet and calves for proper support and to reduce stress on the plantar fascia.
Return to Activity
We gradually reintroduced her running routine, starting with shorter distances and lower intensity. We also educated her on proper footwear, warm-up and cool-down routines, and injury prevention strategies.
Over the course of several weeks, she experienced significant improvement in her pain and function. Best of all, she was able to resume her running routine and other activities she enjoyed with minimal discomfort.

3 Natural Ways to Beat Spring Allergies
It’s finally spring! For most people, this means warm weather, getting outside, and appreciating the blooming flowers and beauty of nature. However, if you have allergies, you might be dreading all of the above.
Don’t give up on the idea of enjoying the season just yet. Did you know there are several natural ways you can help lessen the severity of your allergies? Here are three ways you can start fighting off your allergies, beginning today!
1. Manage stress
Were you aware that stress hormones can wreak havoc on your body, even weakening the immune system? This in turn can worsen seasonal allergies.
A physical therapist can help you to manage your stress by prescribing you with an individualized exercise routine that fits with your lifestyle and personal fitness goals. Other therapeutic methods, such as massage therapy, acupuncture, and aquatic therapy, also have stress relieving properties.
2. Avoid unhealthy foods and drinks
Toxins in the body frequently aggravate allergies. Allergies can flare up when the liver is working overtime metabolizing our stress, medications, alcohol, and processed foods. Therefore, avoiding fatty foods and alcohol can help lessen your allergy symptoms.
3. Clean the house
This one sounds obvious, but it can do wonders to help mitigate allergies! Many allergy triggers can be removed from your home with regular cleaning, which can help relieve your pesky symptoms.
For example, something as simple as changing your pillowcases on a regular basis can improve your symptoms since allergens can transfer from your hair to your pillow at night.

Smoky Maple Bourbon Ham
What do you serve for Easter dinner? Does your family have a tradition when it comes to Easter dinner? Mine does. I have been eating ham for Easter for as long as I can remember.
Ham has been a staple for Easter dinner for what seems like forever. Not only do we all look forward to the ham, but even the sides have become a tradition. I always bring my Tupperware for leftovers. If the ham came with a bone, my father would use the bone and the leftover ham to make pea soup. It was delicious. I like to incorporate the leftover ham into a grilled cheese sandwich, a frittata, or a breakfast hash.
Here is how I put a twist on a boneless ham for Easter. I was recently sent a Kurobuta boneless smoked ham for the work I do in the Barbecue Bible test kitchen. Kurobuta pork comes from the Berkshire “black” pig. Kurobuta comes from the Japanese word for black pig. It is often referred to as the Wagyu of pork. Kurobuta pork is known for its marbling. The marbling produces succulent pork that is juicy, tender, and sweet in flavor.
I set-up my Big Green Egg XL (BGE) for indirect grilling and heated the grill to 325 degrees. To prepare the ham I started by scoring the outside of the ham. Scoring the outside of the ham helps the rub and the glaze adhere to the ham while it cooks.
After scoring the ham I applied my maple sugar rub. The rub consists of maple sugar, Kosher salt, honey granules, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, ground fennel, Worcestershire powder, and smoked paprika.
Pre-cooked hams are often steamed in the oven in a roasting pan covered with foil and then glazed at the end. To create moisture in the BGE I filled a foil drip pan with beer and placed it under the ham while it heated up in the BGE. I placed two maple chucks in the BGE to create wood smoke.
Next, I prepared a maple bourbon glaze for the ham by combing maple syrup, bourbon, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, the maple rub, and some of my home-made cranberry barbecue sauce. The glaze boiled for 5 minutes and then I reduced the heat to get the mixture to reduce and thicken.
The ham started to brown after thirty minutes. Once it started to brown, I began to glaze the ham. I continued to glaze the ham every 20 minutes until it reached an internal temperature of 140 degrees. I let the ham rest and then sliced the ham and topped the ham with more of the warm glaze.
The ham was smoky, juicy, and salty as you would expect from a ham. The ham had a rich full mouth feel like a steak and was as tender as a filet mignon. The crust the glaze created reminded me of burnt ends with the crispy and sweet exterior and the tender ham underneath. The maple spice rub added to the texture and flavor of the crispy exterior of the ham. The apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and the cranberry barbecue sauce balanced the glaze and prevented it from being too sweet. Enjoy!
