Why Should I Choose Physical Therapy?
There are several reasons to choose physical therapy over costly surgeries and medications. Physical therapy has been shown to not only help resolve pain and improve function, but it is also effective at enhancing your overall health and well-being.
One of the most significant benefits of physical therapy is that it can uncover the underlying reasons for your injuries and/or pain. Some of the impairments your physical therapist can help you correct include:
- Loss of motion
- Weakness
- Poor posture and faulty movement patterns
- Gait abnormalities
- Loss of balance
- Coordination deficits
- Neurological impairment
- Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (i.e., poor sleep habits, improper nutrition, lack of exercise, etc.).
Benefits of Physical Therapy
A physical therapist can educate you about ways to move safer, use your energy more efficiently, reduce the risk of re-injury, and enhance the overall effects of your care. The benefits of physical therapy treatments include easing pain, reducing spasms, increasing circulation, and promoting healing.
Physical therapy can help improve your joint range of motion and overall mobility: Our ability to move depends on how individual joints move and how the body’s joints move in concert with one another. Increasing joint range of motion and mobility of the connective tissues around your joints (including the tendons, muscles, fascia, and joint capsules) will help your joints feel better and move better.
This will also help you improve overall functional mobility and activity tolerance, essential for work, leisure, and simple daily functions.
Physical therapy can help strengthen weaknesses and compensation patterns: Through injury or surgery, muscles become weak and impact your ability to move and function normally.
For some, an old injury or abnormal movement pattern has led to weakness due to compensations. Physical therapists are skilled at assessing the whole body, identifying weaknesses, and teaching how to restore strength and function.
Physical therapy can improve your overall health and well-being: When you see a physical therapist for pain and injuries, you will receive rehabilitation benefits to resolve the condition and a total body approach to health.
Physical therapists can recommend nutrition to improve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health. In addition, physical therapists are movement experts and trained to help you move/exercise more, no matter your limitations or restrictions. More activity equals improved health!
Physical therapy can help you reduce the risk of injury: By implementing a holistic approach, we can improve and restore your function and prevent injuries. This may include all components of typical physical therapy and include gait modifications and coordination exercises to stimulate the nervous system and help ensure your mechanics are ideal to avoid an injury.

Gambas Pil Pil
What is Gambas Pil Pil? The short answer is prawns (Gambas) cooked in garlic and chili oil. Pil Pil is a Spanish word that describes a sauce made with garlic and chili infused in hot olive oil. Some believe the “pil pil” is the sound of popping garlic as it cooks in hot oil.
Back in July my wife, my sister-in-law, my niece, and I went to Barcelona, Spain. We ate lots of tapas on our trip. Traditional tapas are small savory dishes, snacks, or appetizers in Spanish cuisine. Tapas can be served hot or cold and combined to be served as a whole meal. One of the tapas I enjoyed consisted of sauteed prawns in garlic and chili infused oil. The prawns were fresh, flavorful, and spicy. I have had a similar prawn (shrimp) dish at a local tapas restaurant and decided it was time to make it myself.
Here is how it all came together. Of course, I had to put my own twist on the recipe by incorporating one of my grills. I started by making a Spanish spice rub for the shrimp. The rub consisted of 1 tbsp of sea salt, 1 tbsp of freshly ground black pepper, 1 tbsp of smoked paprika, 1 tbsp of dried oregano, 2 tsp of ground cumin, 2 tsp of granulated garlic, 1 tsp of hot red pepper flakes, ½ tsp of cinnamon, and ½ tsp of saffron threads. There will be leftover spice rub.
I put one pound of peeled and deveined shrimp in a bowl and generously seasoned it with the spice rub. While the shrimp marinated in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, I started the garlic and chili oil. I heated 3 tbsp of olive oil in a sauté pan. Once the oil was hot, I added the garlic and the chiles for about a minute and removed it from the heat.
I placed the shrimp on metal skewers and grilled over a hot grill. The shrimp cooked for two minutes a side, and I removed the shrimp from the grill. Next, I tossed the shrimp in the sauté pan with the garlic and chili oil and they were ready to serve. The shrimp can be cooked directly in the sauté pan with the garlic and chili oil if you want to skip the grill.
My wife, sister-in-law, niece, and I all got together to watch the Women’s World Cup soccer gold medal game, and I decided to recreate our tapas experience from Spain. To create a whole meal, I served the shrimp with other tapas that included saffron risotto, sauteed mushrooms with garlic and fresh thyme, and a grilled and sliced New York Strip steak. We felt like we were back in Spain. The high heat of the grill and the spice rub produced a flavorful crust on the shrimp. The inside of the shrimp was tender. I enjoyed the heat the chilies added to the sauce. Enjoy!

For many of us, autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year. There’s nothing like the cool refreshing air and breathtaking fall foliage. However, with the changing of the seasons comes a chore that we all dread– raking leaves.
Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to make raking the leaves more enjoyable. If you need help with your follow through on this chore, keep reading!
1. If you can, rake downhill
Raking leaves is hard enough without having to go against gravity. Make this process a little easier on yourself by raking downhill.
2. Pull the leaves towards you as you rake
This technique helps keep stress off your back and prevents injury. For extra preventative measures, tighten your abdominal muscles as you move.
3. Divide your lawn into sections
If you’re dealing with a huge lawn, don’t overdo it by trying to tackle all the space in one day. Instead, divide your lawn into smaller, more manageable sections and spread the work out over a couple days.
4. Wear the proper clothes
To prevent blisters or bug bites, it’s important to wear long sleeves and long pants while raking. It’s also a good idea to invest in a pair of strong gloves to protect your hands while you work.

Patient Success Spotlights

“I never would have understood how valuable PT can be for your entire body, had I not decided to take my injury there. I am glad I did.”
“I injured my upper back muscle while lifting a heavy object. I was experiencing spasms from the slightest of movements: turning my head, getting up from a chair, out of the car, etc.
When it wouldn’t heal after 6 weeks I decided to give Nestor PT a try. I am very glad I did. Through mobilizing my upper back and with a steady progression of stretching exercises and later strength exercises I was able to not only get my back muscle working again without pain, but also strengthened my entire body. After participating in therapy and home exercising, I find myself feeling stronger across my entire body. It’s like my body feels like it did 10 years ago.
The staff at Nestor was knowledgeable and dedicated to helping me get better. They would listen to my feedback and adjust my program accordingly. They are also nice people and fun to chat with during the sessions.
I never would have understood how valuable PT can be for your entire body, had I not decided to take my injury there. I am glad I did.”

3 Tips to Improve Nutrition in the Fall
1. Try to eat more root vegetables
The majority of root vegetables are available all year, but they are most ripe from fall to spring. During the cooler months, garlic, onions, ginger, turnips, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, and parsnips provide plenty of flavor and nutrients.
Many root vegetables are high in folate, which is essential for cell growth and metabolism!
2. Make a hearty soup
Making a large pot of soup every weekend is a great way to improve your nutrition throughout the week. Soups, while they can take several hours to cook, usually require very little active time.
When it comes to recipes to try, your options are virtually endless. There’s hearty bean soup, pureed root vegetable soup, winter squash soup, traditional chicken noodle soup, chili, and so much more! And with temperatures dropping, what tastes better than a warm stew?
3. Select leaner sources of protein
Did you know that regularly eating red meat and processed meat can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and certain cancers?
So, instead of opting for red meat, select leaner sources of protein for your meals and recipes. This can include chicken, turkey, beans, lentils, low fat yogurt, fish, tofu, and nuts.
