Why Should I Choose Physical Therapy?
There are several reasons to choose physical therapy over costly surgeries and medications. Physical therapy has been shown to not only help resolve pain and improve function, but it is also effective at enhancing your overall health and well-being.
One of the most significant benefits of physical therapy is that it can uncover the underlying reasons for your injuries and/or pain. Some of the impairments your physical therapist can help you correct include:
- Loss of motion
- Weakness
- Poor posture and faulty movement patterns
- Gait abnormalities
- Loss of balance
- Coordination deficits
- Neurological impairment
- Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (i.e., poor sleep habits, improper nutrition, lack of exercise, etc.).
4 Benefits of Physical Therapy
A physical therapist can educate you about ways to move safer, use your energy more efficiently, reduce the risk of re-injury, and enhance the overall effects of your care. The benefits of physical therapy treatments include easing pain, reducing spasms, increasing circulation, and promoting healing.
1. Physical therapy can help improve your joint range of motion and overall mobility: Our ability to move depends on how individual joints move and how the body’s joints move in concert with one another. Increasing joint range of motion and mobility of the connective tissues around your joints (including the tendons, muscles, fascia, and joint capsules) will help your joints feel better and move better.
This will also help you improve overall functional mobility and activity tolerance, essential for work, leisure, and simple daily functions.
2. Physical therapy can help strengthen weaknesses and compensation patterns: Through injury or surgery, muscles become weak and impact your ability to move and function normally.
For some, an old injury or abnormal movement pattern has led to weakness due to compensations. Physical therapists are skilled at assessing the whole body, identifying weaknesses, and teaching how to restore strength and function.
3. Physical therapy can improve your overall health and well-being: When you see a physical therapist for pain and injuries, you will receive rehabilitation benefits to resolve the condition and a total body approach to health.
Physical therapists can recommend nutrition to improve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health. In addition, physical therapists are movement experts and trained to help you move/exercise more, no matter your limitations or restrictions. More activity equals improved health!
4. Physical therapy can help you reduce the risk of injury: By implementing a holistic approach, we can improve and restore your function and prevent injuries. This may include all components of typical physical therapy and include gait modifications and coordination exercises to stimulate the nervous system and help ensure your mechanics are ideal to avoid an injury.

Try an October “Reset” Before the Winter Holidays
With the weather finally starting to cool off, October is a great time to get back into the habit of physical activity before the holidays kick into gear. Here are some of our favorite ways to get moving in the fall:
- Go for a walk. Now’s the perfect time to take advantage of cooler temperatures. A brisk walk around your neighborhood is also a great way to admire your neighbors’ Halloween decorations.
- Enjoy a game of tag football. Why should the pros have all the fun? Invite your friends over for a friendly skirmish–no tackling required.
- Try a local hiking trail: You aren’t the only one enjoying the cooler weather. Spend a few hours exploring a nearby hiking trail and check out what nature’s doing to prepare for winter.
At Nestor Physical Therapy, we know things start to get busy at Halloween–but October is the perfect time to squeeze in some fun outdoor activities before things get going!

Maple-Bourbon Pork Loin
There are some classic fall foods that my wife and I look forward to when it’s sweater weather. Pork is the perfect match for classic fall ingredients such as maple, bourbon, apple, cinnamon, nutmeg, and apple cider. Here is an easy pork recipe that brings them all together.
I started by making a marinade for the pork loin. It could be considered a brine, but I did not add any curing salt, which is typically used for brining meat. The marinade consisted of apple juice (or use apple cider), kosher salt, allspice berries, black peppercorns, a cinnamon stick, and some of my maple spice rub. I whisked it all together and set it aside. I trimmed the pork loin and placed it in a resealable plastic bag with the marinade. I recommend marinating the pork for at least 4 hours. I let it marinate overnight.
I removed the pork loin from the marinade and patted it dry with paper towels. I generously seasoned the pork loin with my maple rub and then placed it on a wire rack over a sheet pan, and placed it back in the refrigerator for two hours. The maple rub consists of Kosher salt, maple sugar, allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, smoked paprika, honey granules, ground fennel seed, and Worcestershire powder. I removed the pork loin about thirty minutes before heading to the grill, so I didn’t put a cold piece of meat on a hot grill.
I set up my Big Green Egg for indirect grilling and once it reached 400 degrees, I placed the pork loin on the grill. The pork smoke-roasted for about 20 minutes, and I started to spray it with Bourbon to add some flavor and to keep the pork from drying out. I continued to spray the pork every 15 minutes until it reached 145 degrees on an instant-read thermometer. The pork will continue to cook once it is removed from the grill. I let the pork loin rest for 15 minutes, and it reached a perfect 155 degrees before I sliced it. Resting allows the juices in the pork to be redistributed. Slicing a hot piece of meat will allow all the juices to run out, and you are left with dry food and a juicy cutting board. When I want to take the fall flavors over the top, I baste the pork with a maple bourbon glaze. The glaze is made with bourbon, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, maple rub, and some of my home-made cranberry barbecue sauce. Baste at the end of the cooking process so it doesn’t burn on the outside of the pork before the inside is fully cooked.
The pork loin filled the kitchen with a nice smoky aroma. The pork loin was juicy and tender on the inside, and contrasted with the crusty texture the rub created on the outside. The marinade kept the pork loin from drying out. No applesauce required! The warm spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and paprika) balanced the sweetness of the maple sugar and the honey granules and gave the pork loin a delicious flavor. I served the pork loin with roasted carrots and roasted rosemary potatoes. Enjoy!

Patient Success Spotlights

“When I called to discuss treatment I had been struggling with a lower back strain for months. Daily activity was a struggle and painful. Even sitting was uncomfortable. Dr. Nestor identified the issue on the first visit and I noticed significant improvement the first day. His team helped get me back to 100% within 30 days! I’m now able to be active without pain for the first time in a long time. Thank you!!”

“I arrived at Nestor Physical Therapy after having a total knee replacement at the age of 60 and I couldn’t be more pleased with having made this decision. Not only did the superb therapists at Nestor help me recover to my full strength, they also served as my sounding board, my coach and often times my cheerleader. Going through this process was the most challenging physical recovery I have ever done in my life (even after 10 prior knee surgeries) and it took this entire team to get me to the finish line. That is what Nestor is, a team, which guides you through one of the toughest times in your life and they do so with compassion, energy and understanding. They certainly know what they are doing at Nestor and I am certainly blessed to have received the best possible care with the best possible outcome. Job well done folks and many thanks from one happy patient.”

Use Your 2025 Benefits Before They Reset
As the end of the year approaches, now is the perfect time to take a closer look at your health insurance benefits. If you’ve already met your deductible for 2025, your out-of-pocket costs for physical therapy could be significantly reduced, or even free, for the rest of the year. This means it’s a great opportunity to schedule those additional visits you’ve been putting off, continue your progress, or even start new treatment without worrying about extra expenses.
Many patients don’t realize that once January arrives, deductibles reset and you’ll likely be responsible for more costs until your new deductible is met. By acting now, you can make the most of the coverage you’ve already paid for and head into the new year feeling stronger, healthier, and pain-free.
Don’t let unused coverage go to waste! Schedule your appointments today and take advantage of your 2025 benefits before the year ends.
