Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems

The normal heart rate has an inherent variability, which can be analyzed to assess the impact of respiration and autonomic nervous system activity. The heart rate variability pattern seen during immersion indicates an inherent bias toward a state of relaxation.

Nestor Physical Therapy & Aquatics provides a comprehensive cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program that offers the perfect bridge between critical hospital care and a safe return to your healthy productive lifestyle. We can help patients who have had everything from bypass surgery or cardiomyopathy to emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders.

You will work one-on-one with your therapist, who will monitor your blood pressure, blood/oxygen saturation and heart rate gradually increasing the intensity, as you are able.

By emphasizing Cardiac and Pulmonary education, we make sure you complete the program with helpful information on nutrition, exercise and self-monitoring your individual fitness program. When you complete our program, you’ll have the confidence and security you need to enjoy a more active lifestyle.

The Cardiac Effects Produced by Immersion:

  • Stroke volume increases
  • Heart rate decreases
  • Cardiac output increases
  • The nervous system facilitates improvement in muscle blood flow
  • Increased oxygen delivery and blood glucose delivery to muscle tissue
  • Compression on the chest wall by the water
  • Increase the work of breathing and change respiratory dynamics

What we do for patients

Cardiopulmonary Rehab Phase 3 / Phase 4 program on land:

  • Exercise program monitoring patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and rate perceived exertion
  • Individualized, one on one care
  • Weekly assessment to monitor progress
  • Ideal transition to an independent exercise program
  • Participants can transition into our supervised wellness program
  • State of the art cardio and resistive strengthening equipment

CardioPulmonary Rehab Phase 3 / Phase 4 program in water:

  • Immersion in water causes a hydrostatic pressure gradient improving venous blood flow return to the heart, increasing cardiac volume
  • Immersion causes increased stroke volume and decreased heart rate leading to improved cardiac output and efficiency
  • Immersion causes 2 times the amount of blood volume to enter into the muscle tissue to promote healing much faster
  • Immersion causes an increase in ejection fraction
  • Immersion causes an increase in expiratory reserve volume, residual volume and vital capacity
  • Total work of breathing in water is 60% greater than on land thus strengthening the muscles of inspiration
